When you try to figure out a good activity for your loved one to do, you may automatically think of TV or reading. These are fun ways to be entertained, but TV doesn’t necessarily activate your brain in the right way, and not all seniors want to read for hours at a time. So, a good solution for your loved one is puzzling! Puzzles can be a fun way for your senior to stay engaged while using their brains and not feeling exhausted after it. You can choose many different types of puzzles for your loved one. If you are trying to find activities to fill up the day, this is the best place to start. Try these great ideas for you or a home care provider to help keep your senior busy:
Small Mazes
Handheld mazes are a great way to keep your loved one entertained. They will not only have to use hand-eye coordination they will also have to think about each step of the puzzle. This is not a traditional puzzle but is still one of the best options for your loved one. Your loved one will have to use their memory to figure out which routes they have taken and those they have not. All of this will be fun and challenging for your seniors. The best part of these puzzles is they do not have to be very expensive.
Crossword Puzzles
If you have ever seen a big book of crosswords, this can be a fun way to start each morning. Home care may try to find the best ways to start a morning routine, and crosswords may be the answer. Get your loved one up, stretch, and move around with brisk walks, and while your loved one eats their breakfast, encourage them to sit down with a crossword puzzle. This may not be the type of puzzle you are considering, but it is one of the best! It is especially great for seniors who have just had surgery or cannot move well enough to start their morning with a walk.
Picture Puzzles
Some seniors may like the traditional picture puzzles, and that is okay. They will have to look at each piece on its own to try to fit it together. This will force them to analyze the picture and ensure they are working on hand-eye coordination and memory. It’s the perfect way to spend a day inside when it is too hot or even when it is too cold out. It can keep them busy for hours or just a few minutes every day.
Try Riddles
If you are looking for something to do together, riddles could be the answer. You may find a fun riddle online every day to share with your loved one, or you can buy a book of riddles to read to your loved one. This is something they can also do solo or even with home care. When they know the riddles or if they like a certain riddle, they can share it with others!
